Solidarity City(Map) for Hannover

Commitment & participation for a socially just & climate positive Hannover

We make change visible. The SOLIDARITY CITY(MAP) for Hannover goes online. In 9 categories we have consolidated active stakeholders, initiatives, associations as well as economic activists of the transformation process in Hannover. As a result, we are able to show you far more than 100 different possibilities of engagement. We show who is already working on building a resilient and healthy Hannover worth living in for EVERYONE! And how each individual can support, cooperate or become active themselves to make social cohesion and a climate-positive Hannover possible. We see the SOLIDARITY CITY(MAP) as a first step to empower the people of Hannover and the local structures, enabling everyone to shape a courageous and progressive transformation together.

On behalf of Ökostadt e.V., flowful has transformed the database into an attractive and innovative format. The core competencies of flowful; visualisation (Fanny), graphic design (Karla), and impact communication (Lars), have worked hand in hand to develop the SOLIDARY CITY(MAP) for Hannover, which also outlines Ökostadt e.V. areas of activity and can be seen as a strategic compass for a climate-positive and socially-just urban transformation. You can check the softcopy (for now only in German) following the LINK.

Impact communication

Active Hanover for Environment and Climate

Flowful has shaped the process, the results, and the successes of Ökostadt’s major projects in 2020 Active Hanover for Environment and Climate into an easy-to-understand and modern format. This format shows the main impact of civil society and motivates people to become active themselves and to start the change at their own doorstep.

Within the core competencies of impact communication and graphic design, we provided consulting and implementation support for the concept, text, and design and shaped the format to fit the respective target group profile.

We translated the content and the core messages together with the photographer Nina Weymann and thus created a coordinated and low-threshold format. You can find the softcopy in German only for the time being HERE.

Sustainable City Tours in Hanover

A new format of environmental awareness-raising

By launching the City Tour Format "Green is the new grey", was finally able to bring a concept that was dreamed up a long time ago into action in Hanover.

Green is the new grey! Hanover is green! Every district has many green sides, from lively neighbourhoods and urban gardening projects to do-it-yourself workshops and sustainable consumption alternatives and cafés. On top of that, awareness and exchange about a climate-friendly neighbourhood were created.

For us, neighbourhoods (Kiez) are places of social intermingling, and we transform them into a low-threshold, cultural discussion space through sustainable city tours. This enables us to engage additional layers of society by developing and spreading a culture of sustainability in the neighbourhood context. During the sustainable city tours through different parts of Hanover, we set effective impulses on the theme of sustainability in people's direct relationship to their day-to-day living environment. In the city tours, we rediscover the districts from scratch together with the participants, visiting inspiring landmarks of change and places of participation as well as places that still offer space for creativity and utopia. In Hanover, we have designed and implemented sustainable city tours for the districts of Calenberger Neustadt, Kronsberg, Linden, List, Nordstadt and Südstadt for Ökostadt e. V.

If you would like to take part in a sustainable city tour in Hanover or would like to implement this concept in your city, please contact us.

Edible Cities showcasing the potential of urban gardening and permaculture in one street

The model project and real laboratory "Essbare Heinrich-Heine Straße" (Edible Heinrich-Heine Street) wants to develop private and public green spaces into oases of biodiversity and integrate local showcases of food cultivation for people and insects into the cityscape together with associations, projects and initiatives located in Südstadt. Flowful created the concept and also designed and implemented the permaculture perspective in the implementation of the two eye-catchers on the public, currently grey, open spaces in front of the initiatives Tauschtreff and Naturfreunde Jugend.

Based on the activities of Berthas-Beete (an established and close by community garden project), the idea of an Edible Südstadt is to be successively expanded to other streets in cooperation with the local residents. For 2021, we have put together a group of initiatives (Naturfreunde Jugend, Ökostadt and Tauschtreff) that want to transform a section of Heinrich-Heine-Strasse into a Real Lab for Edible Neighbourhoods and community engagement.

Through a mix of snack and vegetable gardens and the cultivation of street corners, local knowledge will be revived and rediscovered in the cultural space of the streets. The neighbourhood will not only be edible for people, however; the well-designed crop rotation will at the same time serve as a buffet for insects. In transforming the street environment, we want to rediscover the act of the low-barrier gardener as a catalyst for neighbourly ideas and cultural social life. In doing so, the garden spaces will become local exchange and meeting places and so-called change hubs through regular formats of knowledge sharing about sustainability, climate protection in everyday life and urban resilience.

The project offers a cause for people to come together. Everyone is welcome to actively garden and plant, and to contribute. The completed green street invites visitors as well as residents to relax, have a snack, and create a place for exchange. The project aims to ensure social inclusion in the long term, as everyone can participate and at the same time everyone benefits.

The Edible Heinrich Heine Street is an experiment to translate the concept of "Edible City" from a visionary level into a locally limited and tangible space of possibilities and in this way to create a street that is extraordinary for Hanover. Through the accumulation of edible plants, offers and the setting of the thematic focus on a "food production showcase", a landmark is created, which as a motivating innovation has a powerful influence on the development of an "Edible City Hannover".

Flowful has shaped the partners' vision into a project concept and also acquired the first funding sources. We will also support the transformation of the still grey street corners into green, edible oases and the development of the workshop concept bringing flowful’s core competencies of project consulting, educational and permaculture design together.
